Two PhD Positions in Political Anthropology at the University of Basel, Switzerland
Research project: The Institute of Social Anthropology is offering two PhD positions for the research project “Corruption, conflict and cities in West and East Africa” (2014-2016). The project will explore the relationship between corruption, conflict and political transformations in urban contexts. Based on qualitative, interpretive and comparative methodology, the fieldwork will be undertaken in Côte d’Ivoire (Bouaké and Korhogo) and Kenya (Eldoret and Kisumu). Each PhD project will focus on one of these countries, in ongoing collaboration with the full research team.
Position: The positions are based at the Institute of Social Anthropology, University of Basel, and are part of the Graduate School of Social Sciences of the University. They are funded from January 2014-December 2016 (with the possibility of a one-year extension). The salary is based on the rates of the Swiss National Science Foundation (see under http://www.snf.ch/SiteCollectionDocuments/allg_doktorierende_e.pdf).
Eligibility: The positions are open for all who have
• a completed Masters degree (preferably with merit) in social anthropology or neighbouring disciplines;
• fluent speaking and writing skills in English (both PhDs); good (preferably fluent) speaking and writing skills in French (for PhD working in Côte d’Ivoire); working knowledge of French (for PhD working in Kenya); knowledge of Swahili for PhD working in Kenya is an advantage;
• demonstrable fieldwork experience (not necessarily in either Kenya or Côte d’Ivoire);
• a keen interest in exploring urban Africa in contexts of on-going political transformations;
• willingness to work in a research team and actively engage in the Research Group on Political Transformations (see underhttp://ethnologie.unibas.ch/research/research-areas/political-transformations/)
